Evaluation of new applications

We use a holistic selection approach, with flexible selection criteria and a minimum standard expected of all trainees. Our selection process is designed to fairly identify students who will benefit most from the training resources offered by the IMSD graduate training program.

Evaluation criteria for IMSD candidates include the following:

1) Academic Record and Research Experience

2) Motivation for Biomedical Research

3) Engagement with Mentoring

Basic eligibility criteria

Students will be encouraged to apply for an IMSD Scholar position if they meet the following criteria:

  • Have been admitted to a doctoral program in a department with a biomedical focus; incoming first year students are preferred
  • Identify as an individual from a background as described in the NIH's Interest in Diversity guidelines: NOT-OD-20-031
  • Agree to participate in IMSD-related training activities and programs throughout the duration of their training at WSU

After the applications are complete, the selection committee will convene to select IMSD Scholars.

Dr. Bryant-Friedrich will notify the selected students and the director of their department within four weeks of the Steering Committee meeting date, with funding beginning in the fall.
